Software Helps E-Businesses Comply With Tax Codes

Software firm Vertex Inc. recently released its eQuantum for Sales and Use Tax system because the company said clicks-and-mortar firms need to incorporate tax compliance systems into their e-commerce infrastructures.

E-businesses can purchase the service to monitor their own tax compliance issues or can contract the system to be included in their e-commerce applications packages. EQuantum is specially designed for online sellers who also have a physical presence. Vertex said the tax compliance software works quickly and accurately because the details determining taxability are processed separately rather than in informational chunks.

Beth Arnold, spokeswoman for the Berwyn, PA-based firm, said Vertex is targeting the system at online retailers — with bricks-and-mortar stores or sales representatives — who are unknowingly in violation of long-established tax codes.

“What's happened in the debate concerning Internet taxes is that the subject of existing applicable tax codes has been pushed aside,” she said. “People aren't considering that companies have to adhere to the existing laws.”
