**Silver Apples Honor Eight for Their DM Work

NEW YORK — The presidential election may be unresolved, but the Direct Marketing Club of New York yesterday named winners of its Silver Apple Awards at a luncheon here.

“We have definitive winners, and we don't need to recount,” joked board member JoAnne Dunn.

“They forgot to do a little testing before they rolled out,” added Phil Dresden, president of Dresden Direct Inc., Stamford, CT, in his acceptance speech.

Most of the honorees mentioned family and friends in their speeches, reminiscing about the industry in previous decades.

“My mother told my brother, 'Give her a job,' and that's how I got in this business,” said Alice Zea, chairwoman/CEO of AZ Marketing Services, Cos Cob, CT.

Rosemarie Montroy, executive vice president at Direct Media, Greenwich, CT, thanked the industry for “recognizing a woman's talents long before it was politically correct.”

Others honored this year were Bob Albert, board chairman of List Marketing Ltd., Norwalk, CT; Peggy Hatch, group publisher at Target Marketing Group, Philadelphia; Rosalie Sachs Levine, president of RS Levine Creative, New York; and Tom Whiteway, president of List Experts Inc., Clearwater, FL. The Silver Apples are given each year to direct marketing practitioners who have been in the business for at least 25 years.

Publishers Clearing House, Port Washington, NY, received the 2000 Corporate Silver Apple Scholarship Endowment Award. Todd Sloan, senior vice president of creative and business development at PCH, thanked the club for giving PCH an award despite the controversy surrounding sweepstakes mailings over the past few years and joked about the need to give a short acceptance speech.

“I'm afraid I'll be served a subpoena if I stay up here too long,” he said.
