Sharper Image Sales Slip 3% for December

Sharper Image Corp., San Francisco, reported yesterday that total company sales for December fell 3 percent to $93.6 million from $96.9 million the previous December.

Total store sales rose 7 percent to $65.8 million from $61.7 million in December 2000. Comparable store sales fell 4 percent for the month. However, excluding the phenomenal Razor Scooter sales from the prior year, comparable store sales increased 5 percent.

Catalog sales dropped 18 percent to $17.1 million from $21 million in December 2000. Internet sales plummeted 24 percent to $10.8 million from a $14.3 million figure that had represented a 48 percent increase over December 1999. Internet sales for the month excluding auction sales fell 12 percent.

Total sales for the first 11 months of the company's fiscal year dropped 7 percent to $358.5 million from $384.6 million. Total store sales fell 8 percent to $220.1 million from $238.4 million. Comparable store sales fell 16 percent year-to-date. Excluding last year's Razor Scooter sales, comparable store sales dropped 4 percent.

Catalog sales increased 3 percent to $92.4 million over the prior year's $89.9 million. Internet sales fell 18 percent to $46.1 million from the previous year's $56.2 million, which had represented a 119 percent increase over the 1999 figure. With online auction sales excluded from the comparison, Internet sales year-to-date fell 3 percent.
