September 11th Fund to Donors: Stop Sending Money

The United Way of New York City and New York Community Trust requested yesterday that donations be sent to other organizations instead of the September 11th Fund.

The nonprofit organizations said that the monies collected thus far would suffice to meet the needs of the fund's ongoing recovery efforts.

Donations from previously approved fundraisers for the September 11th Fund still will be accepted.

The United Way of New York City and New York Community Trust set up the September 11th Fund immediately after the terrorist attacks, with 100 percent of donations going to the relief effort.

The fund had collected more than $425 million as of yesterday, and grants of more than $160 million were made to victims and families.
