September 11th Fund Donations Reach $89M

In its first week, the September 11th Fund raised $89 million to aid the victims of the terror attacks and their families.

The fund was set up immediately after the attacks by nonprofits United Way of New York City and New York Community Trust. One hundred percent of all donations to the fund will go to the relief effort.

As of yesterday, $89 million was collected via Internet, telephone and mail contributions, said Ani Hurwitz, spokeswoman for New York Community Trust.

Hurwitz could not say what percentage of the donations came through each channel. However, a Sept. 14 news release from the fund said, “More than 12,000 pledges totaling more than $1.4 million have been made via the Internet alone.”

The fund has been promoted through media including television commercials, banner ads, radio spots and print ads, but not direct mail.

“We do not expect to do direct mail,” Hurwitz said.

All promotional efforts have been donated.

Donors can specify which attack site their money goes to help.

Also, tax-refund checks can be donated to the fund by writing, “Pay to the order of United Way September 11th Fund” on the back of the check and mailing it to the United Way of New York City.

Details about donating can be found at www.september11fund.org.
