The U.S. Senate is expected to pass postal reform legislation today after two senators released the holds that they had placed on the bill.
The senators who put a hold on S. 662 were Sens. Jeff Sessions, R-AL, and Jim DeMint, R-SC. The hold was preventing passage of reform legislation. The bill was put on the Senate calendar for consideration under its unanimous-consent rule more than two weeks ago. If no senators object, the bill could pass without debate.
Legislative staff from DeMint's office said his hold was taken off yesterday morning. Wesley Denton, a spokesman for DeMint, said the senator “has closely examined the bill and has communicated his concerns with the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs and also the White House.”
Sessions also withdrew his hold last night.
“We wanted an opportunity to review the bill,” said Michael Brumas, a spokesman for Sessions. “Several senators spent a considerable amount of time looking at the legislation. We believe it's better than the House legislation, and our hope is that it will be improved in conference.”
