Sears Plans Full Apparel Selection Online

Sears, Roebuck & Co. said it will expand its online offerings in the fourth quarter with a full line of clothing.

The Hoffman Estates, IL, retailer currently sells only French Toast school uniforms and a few specialty items on its Web site, sears.com.

“Clothing for the whole family coming later this year” read a banner in the clothing section of the site yesterday. The banner also instructed visitors eager to shop online to click on the links to Sears' catalog Web sites, which appeared directly below. These include sites for Lands' End, WorkWear, Woman's View and Big & Tall.

In other news, the company reportedly has cut back on the assortment of Lands' End infant and toddler clothing in its stores. The reason: They are priced too high for the typical Sears customer. This fall, it will reduce the brand's presence in some stores while boosting it in others where the clothing is performing well.

Catalog and online sales are reportedly down for Lands' End during the first half of 2004 because of weather, a decrease in catalog circulation and cannibalization by stores.
