Blue Cross and Blue Shield of South Carolina yesterday began a free service that lets physicians file healthcare claims online.
Physicians who have registered a profile at SouthCarolinaBlues.com, CompanionHealthcare.com or HMOBluesSC.com can fill out claim information at these sites in the section labeled “My Insurance Manager.” The claims are sent directly to Blue Cross' data processing center. The system performs an immediate error check alerting the physicians about any missing or incorrect information before the claim is processed.
The Web sites also let doctors submit referrals online, check the status of a patient's claim, check eligibility, view benefit booklets, check authorizations and referral status, check how much a patient has paid toward his deductible and confirm whether a patient has any other health insurance.
Blue Cross has roughly 8,000 physicians in its networks in South Carolina. More than half of the physicians have registered to use its online offerings since they began in late 1999.
