Sales Are Up at Sharper Image's Web, Catalog Divisions

Sales at The Sharper Image rose 19 percent to $24.5 million in April in part because of increases at its catalog and Internet divisions.

Catalog sales grew to $7.3 million, a 67 percent increase over April 2000's $4.3 million. Internet sales saw its sales increase by 17 percent to $3.4 million from last year's $2.9 million.

Total store sales increased 4 percent to $13.9 million from $13.3 million. However, same-store sales decreased by 1 percent. Richard Thalheimer, The Sharper Image's chairman/CEO, said the decrease in same-store sales for the month and the first quarter reflects the prior year's same-store increase fueled largely by strong scooter sales performance.

For the first quarter, the catalog/retailer saw its sales increase 15 percent to $67.5 million from last year's $58.8 million. Total store sales increased 4 percent to $39.8 million from $38.2 million.

Catalog sales saw a hefty 48 percent increase to $18 million from last year's $12.2 million, while Internet sales increased by 15 percent to $9.7 million from last year's $8.4 million.
