R.R. Donnelly to Close CT Printing Plant

R.R. Donnelley & Sons Co. said yesterday that it will close its printing plant in Old Saybrook, CT, in 2002.

The plant’s closing is part of a streamlining effort expected to affect its 500 employees. Company officials say they will offer separation pay and assist staffers in finding other jobs.

The Chicago-based company will integrate operations into its Lancaster, PA, complex, which will be expanded to better serve catalog and magazine customers.

“After careful review, we determined our Old Saybrook facility lacks the scale necessary to support the current and future needs of our customers,” Robert S. Pyzdrowski, president of commercial printing operations, said in a statement.

Over the next two years, the company will invest $300 million to improve the efficiency of its printing network.
