R.R. Donnelley to Standardize Print Operations

Print communications agency R.R. Donnelley will transition its print operations to standardized workflow and file format specifications over the next year and a half, the company said yesterday.

R.R. Donnelley said it will move its entire print platform to portable document format or PDF. The change stems from the company's efforts a year ago to standardize its operations within specific industry markets.

Last year, R.R. Donnelley instituted a PDF workflow system in its book publishing operations designed by Canadian graphics arts technology provider Creo Inc., Vancouver, British Columbia. That same system will be used across the R.R. Donnelley operations network.

As part of the effort, R.R. Donnelley will begin opening new print facilities, called Digital Solution Centers, for preparing files for print. The first will be located at R.R. Donnelley's Digital Prepress Center in Pontiac, IL, 60 miles southwest of the company's headquarters in Chicago.

The new center will serve trade, association, business-to-business and special interest consumer magazines as well as specialty catalogs. Approximately 700 R.R. Donnelley customers will be affected by the opening of the new center.
