Royal Mail Debuts Digital Stamp

Royal Mail launched the United Kingdom's first digital stamp yesterday with a new online postage-purchasing system called SmartStamp.

SmartStamp subscribers receive a CD-ROM containing a software application they download to their computers. After downloading the software, customers can print stamps directly onto envelopes from a printer. SmartStamps can be printed for most UK and international mail.

The cost of the postage is deducted from a prepaid user account. Customers can credit their prepaid account with a credit card or direct debit at any time. Royal Mail said the SmartStamp service helps businesses track their postage spending.

Customers pay a monthly subscription of $9.08 (U.S.) or an annual subscription of $90.96 (U.S.) plus the cost of postage.
