Riot Entertainment says it is the first company to adapt a literary character to mobile phones with its “Bridget Jones” content.
The Helsinki, Finland-based wireless entertainment company has a two-year development partnership with Helen Fielding, the author of two books about a fictional character, Bridget Jones, including “Bridget Jones's Diary,” released as a film in the United States and the United Kingdom on April 13.
“Bridget Jones” news and games are expected to be available on mobile phones in the UK to coincide with the movie release and will be added to U.S. mobile phones later this year.
Fielding will work with Riot Entertainment to develop daily diary updates, personality tests, Bridget Jones' Guide to Life, dieting techniques, self-help theories and dating strategy, based on the books' discussion of these topics.
“For singletons like Bridget, the phone is becoming a major means of human contact,” Fielding said. “Texting allows one to be much more obsessive even than e-mail. You can be in communication with significant others anytime and anywhere.”
The target of the services is “Bridget Jones” fans, typically women in their late 20s and early 30s and curious men, according to Riot Entertainment. In addition, the company estimates that 80 percent of this audience is likely to be avid mobile users.
