*Report: FTC Close to Privacy Agreement

The Federal Trade Commission may soon endorse an Internet privacy policy negotiated with industry leaders, according to a report. Among the provisions the FTC reportedly will seek:

• Users will receive notice permitting them to opt out of data collection on their movement around the Web.

• If companies wanted to link information they have gathered on individuals in the past to current surfing data, they would need to get affirmative permission.

• In the future, Internet users will be able to decide against permitting their names to be linked to other profiling information in order to identify them by name.
