Reno Probes FBI's “Carnivore” Email Monitoring System

Attorney General Janet Reno said today she is investigating the FBI's new high-tech “Carnivore” system of e-mail monitoring after the American Civil Liberties Union asserted that the system breaches both Internet service providers' and customers' rights, according to reports. The Carnivore system is placed on an Internet service provider and it scans all incoming and outcoming e-mails, reading both sender and recipient addresses, as well the subject lines of e-mails, to decide whether to make a copy of the entire message. Telling reporters she wanted to “make sure we apply the Constitution in a consistent and balanced way,” Reno said she will ensure that both privacy safeguards and the needs of federal enforcement officials are met.
