Random House Forms Electronic Book Unit

Random House, New York, said yesterday it would form a new unit dedicated to publishing and marketing electronic books.

The company, which is owned by Bertelsmann AG, Gutersloh, Germany, said it already has 20 titles earmarked for electronic distribution including both fiction and nonfiction titles.

Random House joins Time Warner and Simon & Schuster as the most recent conglomerate to form an e-book unit.

Among the works will be the memoirs of a New York dominatrix and a writer’s search for a baldness cure.

Random House also said it will debut Modern Library e-books in the near future. The Modern Library program will feature 100 classic literature works from the company’s bound-book backlist.
