Quebecor Plans Up to 22 New Presses

Quebecor World looks to add up to 22 new presses from 2005 to 2007, an investment of about $330 million. The equipment will be targeted at Quebecor's magazine, catalog, retail and book platforms.

Quebecor, which once boasted of being the largest commercial print firm in North America, was supplanted in February with the merger of R.R. Donnelley and Moore Wallace.

Quebecor said it would place a “firm order” for 12 new presses to be in operation in 2005 and 2006 at a cost of $165 million. It will retain an option to buy 10 more presses to be commissioned in 2006 and 2007, also at a cost of $165 million.

The new presses will coincide with the decommissioning of older ones. The company thinks that after a year and a half of cutting its cost base, it now can invest in its platform.
