Postal Leaders Will Gather in Switzerland for UPU Conference

Postal leaders from around the world converge on Geneva next month at the Universal Postal Union's 2002 Strategy Conference to examine the challenges confronting the postal industry.

The Oct. 29-31 event at the Geneva International Conference Center will focus on five themes: Postal reform in the context of globalization and sustainable development; markets and regulation; the role of the postal sector in the information society; the new economy and the social dimension; and preparing for the future.

According to the UPU, decision makers from postal administrators and governments of all 189 UPU member countries will participate. Speakers will include representatives from the Swiss federal government, the canton of Geneva, the World Bank and the World Trade Organization. Postal leaders represented include the chief executives of postal enterprises such as Australia Post, Canada Post, Consignia, Deutsche Post, La Poste France, Swiss Post and the U.S. Postal Service.

The UPU said the conference also will give the organization a chance to reaffirm its role in the international communications market and identify future postal strategy responses to the challenges of the next 10 years.
