PLI, Chamber of Commerce Offer Small Business Privacy Tools

The Privacy Leadership Initiative and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce have teamed up to provide free online privacy resources to small and mid-size businesses.

The program, called Privacy Made Simple, is for firms interested in developing or upgrading their privacy policies and notices.

A 57-page Privacy Made Simple Handbook is available for downloading at the PLI and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Web sites, which can be reached at www.understandingprivacy.org and www.uschamber.com.

The handbook covers topics such as consumer notice, choice and security, enforcement and children's privacy, access and European Union safe harbor principles, federal and state privacy laws, and U.S. privacy enforcement agencies. It also contains a glossary of privacy terms and meanings.

According to the PLI, the idea for the handbook came from a recent survey by Harris Interactive that indicated consumer wariness about doing business with small companies.

PLI consists of the chairmen and CEOs of a variety of companies and associations, including Dell Computer Corp., Ford Motor Co., DoubleClick, Eastman Kodak, IBM, Acxiom, the Direct Marketing Association and the American Association of Advertising Agencies.
