Pitney Bowes, a mailing hardware and software vendor, has introduced a new digital metering system, called the DM Series Digital Mailing System, with a delivery confirmation feature that allows customers to track their Priority Mail pieces electronically.
The Digital Mailing System will be on display through Wednesday at the Spring National Postal Forum in Orlando, FL.
It eliminates the 40-cent per piece tracking fee and the need to go the post office.
The U.S. Postal Service's Delivery Confirmation Service provides Priority Mail package mailers with information about the delivery of their packages. It lets customers apply an identifying barcode to each mail piece, and when the barcode is scanned, information — including the date, ZIP code and whether the item was delivered, attempted, forwarded or returned to the sender — is recorded. Mailers can track the status of their pieces in various ways.
Pitney Bowes, Stamford, CT, said that although the USPS has provided the Delivery Confirmation Service through its retail windows for a while, the DM Series Digital Mailing System gives low- and middle-volume mailers electronic access to the USPS service without having to leave their offices. Mailers enter a tracking number on the meter's control panel, and the meter transmits the data via modem to the USPS. Within 24 hours, users can track the status of their Priority Mail at www.usps.com.
