PetsUnited buys PetSmart’s equine business

PetsUnited has acquired the State Line Tack online and catalog business from PetSmart Inc. for an undisclosed sum.

The sale includes the State Line Tack brand, inventory, customer lists and other assets.

PetSmart, Phoenix, had previously announced its intentions to exit the equine business.

PetSmart will look to sell the Brockport, NY, facility out of which State Line Tack operated. The 396,000-sq.-ft. facility includes a warehouse, call center and retail store on about 32 acres.

Also, PetSmart will move its call center and fulfillment operations for its online pet business to an outside e-commerce provider by Sept. 1.

PetsUnited – a privately held holding company for pet-related brands including Dog.com, Fish.com and Horse.com – said it will move the State Line Tack business from Brockport, NY, to its Hazelton, PA, facility in the next 60 days.

Online and catalog orders and shipping will continue as usual during the transition period.

PetSmart’s Brockport store will close Aug. 25. The approximately 240 associates who work at the Brockport distribution center and call center will be laid off over the next six months.
