PetEdge Buyers Bite for Patriotic Products

PetEdge, Topsfield, MA, a business-to-business pet supply cataloger, has seen patriotic-themed items among the top 1 percent of products in terms of sales.

“We launched the program in January of '02, and from the get-go they were very successful products,” said Andy Katz, president of PetEdge. “[The] patriotic-themed items included collars, leashes, beds and toys, all [of which are] for dogs. Starting in January and February of '02, some of [the products] were in the top 1 percent of our 10,000 items, including the dog collars and leashes with patriotic themes.

“The feeling of patriotism has a lot to do with their success. We are providing a way to have pet owners express their patriotism.”

He placed sales “in the tens of thousands … from the whole family of patriotic-themed items” during the fall/holiday season.

“They're good-quality dog toys we sell to businesses for $1.49 apiece, and collars that are going for 99 cents,” he said. “Also, the beds have opening price points of $4.99.”
