People Wary of Online Privacy, Study Says

A majority of U.S. consumers, both those who use the Internet and those who do not, think that going online is a threat to their privacy, according to a study released yesterday.

When people were asked whether going online “put their privacy at risk,” 63.6 percent of Internet users and 76.1 percent of non-users either agreed or strongly agreed, according to the report issued by the University of California at Los Angeles.

The study, based on a random telephone poll of 2,096 households nationwide this spring, found that 97.8 percent of Internet users who have not purchased anything online expressed some concern over credit card security. And more than nine of 10 Internet users are “somewhat or very concerned” about credit card security.
