WASHINGTON — Nonprofit mailers should not be concerned about what will happen to their discounted rates if the postal service is privatized, according to a panel yesterday at the Direct Marketing Association/Internet Alliance 2001 Government Affairs Conference.
The panel, which was hosted by the DMA Nonprofit Federation, included John Nolan, deputy postmaster general; Ruth Goldway, a member of the Postal Rate Commission; Robert Taub, chief of staff for Rep. John McHugh, R-NY; and John Temple, president of Guideposts, a major mailer.
Privatization has been mentioned as one possibility for postal reform. All of the panel members expressed the need for reform but told the audience that nonprofit mailers would still receive discounts.
“I am very confident, given the power of nonprofit mailers in this country, that nonprofit rates [will receive discounts],” Nolan said. “I can't imagine a situation where that would be part of the discussion.”
