Online Holiday Shopping Sees Increase Over Last Year

A study released yesterday by Web research firm PC Data, Reston, VA, and investment firm Goldman Sachs, New York, indicates that online consumer spending this holiday season more than doubled last year's levels.

Online spending for the period between the first week of November and the week ending Dec. 17 was $8.7 billion. Spending during the same period last year totaled $4.2 billion.

Online spending during the 2000 holiday season peaked during the week ending Dec. 17. During that week consumers spent $1.6 billion shopping online. Consumers spent $878 million online during the same week in 1999.

Approximately 2,800 Internet users were surveyed for the study.
