Online Ad Spending Experiences First Decrease in 2000

Online advertising spending declined from July to August, the first month-to-month decline this year, according to a report released yesterday by Adzone Interactive.

Spending declined from $1.53 billion in July to $1.41 billion in August, a 7.6 percent drop.

The biggest spender for the month was AOL.com at more than $28 million, followed by Nextcard.com, Amazon.com, BarnesandNoble.com, Fidelity.com, Datek.com, ESPN.GO.com, Sears.com, Computershopper.zdnet.com and PlanetRX.com. AOL also claimed the top spot for ad revenue in August at roughly $78 million.

The report tracked more than 1,300 domestic Web sites.
