Spending on Father’s Day this year is anticipated to reach $9.0 billion, up from last year’s $8.2 billion, research from the National Retail Federation found.
The average person is expected to spend $88.80 on gifts for Dad, compared with the $122.16 spent earlier this year on Mom, according to the NRF’s 2006 Father’s Day Consumer Intentions and Actions Survey, conducted by BIGresearch.
The NRF said 69 percent of consumers expect to buy at least one card for Father’s Day while 27 percent will give gift certificates and 38.1 percent will spring for a meal or some other outing.
Clothes for Dad will be popular as well with 32 percent saying they will opt for giving threads, while 22.3 percent will give books or CDs, 15 percent will give electronics or computer-related merchandise, 10.9 percent plan to give home improvement or gardening tools, 9.1 percent sporting goods and 11.2 percent tools or appliances.
