NPD Service Tracks Sell-Through at Distributor Level

NPD INTELECT, Port Washington, NY, a marketing information provider, yesterday said it was going to begin to track distributor-level product movement for the technology industry via its new NPD INTELECT Distributor Report service. According to NPD INTELECT, by tracking sell-through at the distributor level it can provide situation analyses and offer perspective in areas including, the business-to-business market that flows through the value added reseller (VAR) channel.

This monthly service will sample the largest distribution channel players, including Ingram Micro, Tech Data, Merisel, Pinacor, Custom Edge and Hall-Mark. Its distributor projection methodology leverages this sample to represent a universe of organizations doing $250 million or more in sales annually. NPD INTELECT said this universe represents better than 90 percent of the $60 plus billion in annual sales that circulate through technology distributors.

The benefit provided to technology product manufacturers and distributors by the new system, according to NPD INTELECT, is that it will enable them to better pinpoint opportunities and prepare or refine product strategies. Market, brand, feature, and item/model-level sales in units and dollars and distributors’ average prices are available for core technology categories. Additional categories will be named later.

The NPD INTELECT Distributor Report completes its suite of marketing information services that track sell-through data in the retail dealer and mail-order channels.
