Northrop Grumman Gets USPS Deal to Continue Bio-Agent Testing

The U.S. Postal Service confirmed yesterday that it awarded Northrop Grumman Corp.'s Security Systems LLC unit in Baltimore a contract to continue testing of its Bio-Agent Detection System, designed to protect postal employees and consumers from bioterrorism.

Northrop Grumman and team members Cepheid Inc., Smiths Detection, Edgewood Inc. and Sceptor Industries will install and test systems at 14 USPS facilities.

The USPS would not say how much the contract was worth, but that it will come out of the $675 million allotted to the USPS last year and earlier this year from Congress.

The Bio-Agent Detection System analyzes air samples from mail-sorting systems to search for trace amounts of anthrax spores and other biological agents.
