Nordstrom Sales Dip 0.2 Percent for December

Nordstrom Inc. reported preliminary sales of $735.7 million during December, a decrease of 0.2 percent compared with sales of $737.4 million posted in December 2000.

Same-store sales for the Seattle-based retailer fell 2.3 percent.

Same-store sales among full-line stores increased 4.3 percent during the first six days of the Men's Half-Yearly event (Dec. 26-31) compared with the same event in 2000.

Preliminary year-to-date sales of $5.3 billion are up 2 percent from 2000 year-to-date sales of $5.2 billion. Year-to-date same-store sales fell 2.9 percent.

After adjusting for the effect of differences in the specific days of the week that comprised December 2001 compared with December 2000, total sales for December 2001 rose about 0.1 percent while same-store sales fell about 2.1 percent.

Adjusted same-store sales in full-line stores declined in all geographic regions but increased in the women's shoes, junior women's, cosmetics and kids wear merchandise categories.
