NetIQ Says It Will Acquire WebPosition Search Engine Software

NetIQ Corp., maker of the WebTrends analytics software, said yesterday that it plans to acquire FirstPlace Software Inc.'s WebPosition product line later this week.

The acquisition, whose terms were not disclosed, yields WebPosition Gold, a search engine optimization software product. According to NetIQ, San Jose, CA, the deal will strengthen the company's WebTrends unit in the search engine analytics area.

“Today, five out of six commercial searches worldwide originate from organic search results,” Greg Drew, senior vice president and general manager of NetIQ's WebTrends unit, said in a statement. “With the addition of WebPosition Gold, we are positioned to analyze activity from both paid and organic searches and optimize Web pages to drive improved conversion.”

WebTrends lets users measure and optimize results from the company's online marketing efforts, including commerce analysis, content effectiveness and campaign performance. Web Position Gold helps users ensure they are publishing content that is relevant to searches conducted by online visitors.

Meanwhile, NetIQ later this month releases WebTrends 7, the latest generation analytics service offered either as software or a hosted solution. The new version enables easier interpretation of results, a one-shot view of which marketing activities drive the best results and better integration of Web analytics into daily business processes using common tools like Microsoft Excel for cross-channel analysis.
