Needleman Named Editor of Conde Nast Home Shopping Title

Conde Nast Publications Inc. named Deborah Needleman as editor-in-chief of its yet-unnamed home-focused magazine due to launch in the middle of next year.

Needleman has been editor-at-large for New York-based Conde Nast's House & Garden since 1998, covering architecture, interior design, landscapes, and garden layouts. She joined the publication in 1996 as photography editor.

Among other stints, Needleman has worked or written for Men's Journal, The New York Times, Lucky, Horticulture and Slate, where she wrote “The Cranky Gardener” column. Needleman began her publishing career at The Washington Post, where she was the photography editor for the Sunday magazine from 1988 to 1993.

Based in New York, Needleman begins her new duties immediately. Her task is to produce a hybrid between the shopping and shelter categories.

Role models in the Conde Nast shopping magazine portfolio are Lucky, launched in 2000 for women, and the title equivalent for men called Cargo, which last month hit newsstands. On the shelter side, the publisher has House & Garden and Architectural Digest.
