MPA campaigns for greater magazine recycling

To increase awareness among consumers, the Magazine Publishers of America has started an initiative urging readers to recycle their magazines.

The announcement was made yesterday in Orlando, FL, by MPA president/CEO Nina Link at the organization’s annual retail conference titled “The Marketing of Magazines and Books.”

The campaign features two new logos that will begin appearing in magazines later this year.

The first will read “Please Recycle This Magazine,” the second “Please Remove Samples or Inserts Before Recycling.”

The second logo will be included in issues of magazines that contain CDs, product samples and other non-paper inserts that can make it harder to recycle the magazine.

The MPA recommended that the logo be located in each issue of MPA-member publications in an easy-to-find place, such as in the masthead or at the bottom of the table of contents.

Ms. Link also urged the magazine industry to use more certified paper in its magazines.

Retail efficiency was cited as another way to improve the magazine industry’s environmental performance.

Reducing the number of unsold copies is better for the environment and a company’s bottom line, Ms. Link claimed in a statement.

More information about the campaign is available at www.magazine.org/pleaserecycle.
