Mobile marketing a win for sports franchises

Professional sports teams’ records may go up and down, but they’re finding steady success with their mobile marketing, according to The New York Times.

The Pittsburgh Penguins National Hockey League franchise, for instance, has seen an increase in mobile club members from 14,000 in the 2008-09 season to 72,440 currently. And while fans of the Cleveland Cavaliers NBA team may have been spurned by LeBron James this summer, they still receive 1.5 million text messages from the team each month.

Meanwhile, the NHL’s Chicago Blackhawks added 30,000 consumers to their mobile database last year, and the Miami Dolphins professional football team has quadruped their text club in the pat two years, according to the Times.
