MLB Website Strikes Out on Opening Day

Major League Baseball Advanced Media’s www.MLB.com crashed yesterday as fans logged on for play-by-play Webcasts and information on their favorite teams.

MLB.com attributed the downtime to the opening day traffic spike.

At least one team site, www.Yankees.com was slow to load, and the play-by-play Webcast for the Yankees’ game against the Kansas City Royals was unavailable at one point yesterday afternoon.

The downtime comes one week after MLB announced a $20 million deal with RealNetworks. The companies said the deal would help bring “every pitch of every game” to fans over the Web.

Fans who listened live over the Web for free last year will have to pay a $9.95 yearly subscription fee to get Web-based play-by-play through MLB.com this year.
