MeadWestvaco Will Shut Consumer Packaging Plant

MeadWestvaco Corp.'s consumer packaging plant in Newark, DE, will close in late April, the company said yesterday.

The plant employs about 80 workers, MeadWestvaco said. It has been open since 1962 and was formerly part of Westvaco Corp., which in 2002 merged with The Mead Corp. to form MeadWestvaco.

MeadWestvaco has announced several closings this year, including another plant in its consumer packaging group in Greenville, MS; two manufacturing plants in Springfield, MA; a consumer and office products facility in Front Royal, VA; and four coated-paper machines in Chillicothe, OH, and Luke, MD.

These closures were part of MeadWestvaco's efforts to consolidate operations as a result of the merger. Stamford, CT-based MeadWestvaco is a paper and packaging producer with operations in 33 countries.
