Martha Stewart Gets 5 Months in Prison

Martha Stewart was sentenced Friday to five months in prison, five months of home confinement and fined $30,000 on four counts of conspiracy and lying to investigators for insider trading of biotech firm ImClone Systems Inc.’s stock in December 2001.

The 62-year-old former chief executive of lifestyle merchandising and publishing company Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia Inc. also gets two years of supervised probation after she is released.

“I’m not afraid,” Stewart is reported to have said after the sentencing in New York. “I’ll be back.”

U.S. District Court Judge Miriam Goldman Cederbaum could have sentenced Stewart to 10 to 16 months in prison. Stewart won a stay to appeal her conviction, extending her freedom for a while longer. If her appeal fails, Stewart will serve time in a women’s prison in Danbury, CT, which is near her home.
