Marissa Mayer named Yahoo CEO

Former Google executive Marissa Mayer has been named president and CEO of Yahoo, the company said in a statement July 17.

The announcement comes after months of turnover in Yahoo’s C-suite. In May, former Yahoo CEO Scott Thompson was ousted after just four months in the position, after it was alleged that he had fabricated parts of his resume. In December, Yahoo CMO and EVP Elisa Steele stepped down.

According to a statement by Yahoo, Mayer was most-recently VP of local, maps and location services at Google. She first joined Google in 1999, and was the company’s first female engineer. Prior to joining Google, Mayer was a researching for UBS in Zurich.

“I’m incredibly excited to start my new role at Yahoo! tomorrow,” Mayer tweeted after the announcement.

Representatives at Yahoo were unavailable for comment.
