Major Carriers Raise Rates Today

United Parcel Service, FedEx Corp. and Airborne Inc. implement new shipping rates effective today.

UPS Next Day Air rates increase 3.2 percent while the Worldwide Express service rises 2.9 percent. Rates for UPS commercial ground services rise 3.9 percent, and the residential surcharge changes from $1.10 to $1.15.

FedEx's rates for domestic shipments and U.S. exports are rising by an average of 3.5 percent to 3.9 percent.

Prices for FedEx Express rise an average of 3.5 percent for shipments within the United States and overseas. Rates for FedEx Express between the United States and Puerto Rico increase an average of 5 percent. FedEx Ground service prices rise an average of 3.9 percent.

FedEx also is increasing its delivery area surcharges from $1.50 to $1.75 and raising Saturday pickup and delivery surcharges from $10 to $12.50. Other FedEx Express rate changes include:

· Applying dimensional weight pricing to international shipments at or below one cubic foot, except for shipments between the United States and Puerto Rico.

· Relaunching FedEx International Priority Freight service from the United States to Puerto Rico with a one-day service commitment. The current IPF service, with a three-day commitment, will be offered as FedEx International Economy Freight.

Airborne's rates for its 10:30 a.m., Express AM, Next Afternoon and Two-Day services rise an average of 3 percent. Increases average 4 percent for International Express and 3.9 percent for Airborne Ground and airborne@home.

The increases apply to customers not under rate-guarantee contracts. Comparable increases for customers with contractually guaranteed rates will be phased in as their existing contracts are renewed.

Airborne is increasing several other fees. The delivery area surcharge rises to $1.75 from $1.50; the residential delivery fee to $1.35 from $1.25; and the Saturday pickup and delivery fee to $12.50 from $10.
