Mail Order Leads New York BBB Complaint List

Complaints about mail orders topped the metropolitan New York Better Business Bureau's 2002 list, the organization said this week.

Complaints in the mail-order category reached 2,411, up 24 percent from the previous year. The biggest category change was in Internet sales and services, which saw a 73 percent drop in complaints.

“The complaint statistics on Internet sales are encouraging because they indicate a growing level of improved customer satisfaction,” said Ronna Brown, president of the area bureau.

The BBB received more than 1.3 million inquiries about New York-area companies last year. Most were done on the BBB's Web site, www.newyorkbbb.org. Home improvement received the most inquiries, with 136,839.

The New York office covers the five boroughs of New York City, Long Island and the mid-Hudson region. The BBB is a private, nonprofit organization.

Other categories and the number of complaints: consumer electronics, 2,131; financial services, 1,888; automotive, 1,777; Internet sales and services, 1,699; home improvement, 1,690; household and office furnishings, 1,394; publishing/communications, 947; moving and storage, 862; and travel, 722.
