Local Search Experiencing Strong Growth, with Google in the Lead

Local search is still climbing the ladder of success, as it continues to gain momentum, according to a recent study conducted by comScore Networks, Reston, VA.

Google is at the head of the game, making up 29.8 percent of all local searches for July of this year. Yahoo was not far behind with 29.2 percent.

The study found that the 63 percent of Internet users in the United States executed local search online in July, up a whopping 43 percent from the same time last year.

Forty-one percent of individuals conducting local search are most often looking for something near their home, 59 percent of these individuals said they were looking for something entertainment related. Fifty-two percent of local searchers said they use local search to find a business phone number.

Executing local searches very often results in a consumer taking action. In the second quarter of 2006 47 percent of local searchers visited a merchant as a result of performing the search at an earlier time.
