Leon Gorman, chairman of apparel cataloger L.L. Bean, will discuss his new book 8 a.m. Oct. 5 at the Barnes & Noble Business Breakfast Series in the bookseller’s store on 555 Fifth Avenue at 46th Street in New York.
The book, called “L.L. Bean: The Making of an American Icon,” offers a behind-the-scenes look at the 94-year-old, Freeport, ME-based company’s history and culture.
A chronicle of business, the book discloses Mr. Gorman’s efforts to balance change with tradition through good times and bad. He also offers tips on how to shape a career and a business around values.
The 336-page hardback includes 16 pages of photographs. It is available for sale online, in stores and via L.L. Bean’s catalog and Web site at www.llbean.com.
L.L. Bean is marketing the book in its latest catalog that dropped a few days ago to customers and prospects nationwide. Mr. Gorman also has an extensive speaking tour planned at various L.L. Bean stores.
An independent cataloger with a small retail footprint but sizable online operations, L.L. Bean is one of the leading players in its category, competing with Sears’ Lands’ End brand. L.L. Bean’s heritage is in rugged apparel and accessories.
The Barnes & Noble Business Breakfast Series is free and open to consumers. Reservations are not required. The series is part of Barnes & Noble’s ongoing book reading and signing initiatives.
Mr. Gorman will be signing copies after he takes questions from the audience.
