L.L. Bean Cuts 175 Workers

L.L. Bean said yesterday that 175 employees would be laid off as part of the company’s previously planned restructuring.

Most of the slashed jobs are in the company’s merchandising and marketing divisions as well as its administrative units at L.L. Bean’s Freeport, ME, headquarters. The cuts represent approximately 4 percent of L.L. Bean’s total workforce of 4,200 employees.

Hourly employees involved in distribution, customer support, manufacturing and retail will not be affected, L.L. Bean said. All laid-off employees were given 30-days notice as well as one week to two weeks of severance pay and job-search assistance.

The layoffs are part of the company’s ongoing review of its long-term operations, said Chris McCormick, president and CEO of L.L. Bean.
