Letter: Telemarketing Answer Lies in Effective List Management, Not Unfair Laws

In regard to the editorial “Let the DNC Decision Stay” (Feb. 23), first of all, “56 million Americans” have not signed up for the national DNC registry. How can you publish such an egregious error? There are 56 million phone numbers in the national database, but any intern knows that this does not translate into people.

Where do you get your information? I have three land lines at home, we have two cell numbers, too. That’s five phone numbers for us. If we’re anywhere close to the average, that translates to about 11 million households, which is a much better way to assess the impact of the federal DNC law. Quit printing such inflammatory nonsense.

Secondly, I’d like to ask you, if not now, when and where do we draw the line on the ongoing onerous attack on the entire direct marketing industry? Are you a proponent of the demise of the very industry that puts the food on your table? There are other solutions, like effective list management, rather than the unfair and unjust laws that have been enacted. But it appears that you are willing to offer up the telephone marketing industry as a sacrifice. Amazing.

I am reminded of Martin Niemoeller’s words from another time: “First they came for the communists, but I was not a communist so I did not speak out. Then they came for the socialists and the trade unionists, but I was neither, so I did not speak out. Then they came for the Jews, but I was not a Jew so I did not speak out. And when they came for me, there was no one left to speak out for me.”

Print that, then please join the team.
