Letter: It’s Remarkable How Some Businesses Conduct Business

Corporate greed – Is it bad business, or is it just remarkable?

How much is enough? With new do-not-call legislative restraints, CAN-SPAM and recent consumer privacy breaches, the prevailing negative publicity on direct marketing and growing cost of doing business coupled with reseller price hikes, literally overnight, of 200 percent, 300 percent, 400 percent and even 500 percent are just remarkable!

My mother once told me, “If you can’t say anything nice about a person (corporation), then don’t say anything at all.” So once again, I will just say: remarkable.

I am a small business owner and am responsible for the livelihood of 25+ employees and their families. So, again, I will simply say remarkable. That is the best word that comes to mind when I think of the way certain businesses and businessmen in our industry conduct business.

Open competition is healthy and is the basic premise of the American business economy. Alternative data sources have already been found to fix this simply remarkable and unprecedented action. I would like to wish all other small business owners good fortune in finding remedies to overcome this remarkable obstacle. We will endure remarkable situations that face small business owners in the direct marketing industry from time to time, and we will continue to thrive.

Mark Traverso, Vice president of list management and new business development, Lighthouse List Co.
