Paulanne Simmons’ article (“Handwriting Font Raises Response Rate,” Nov. 27, www.dmnews.com/articles/2000-11-20/11708.html) should have been titled “Dishonesty Is Profitable.”
A computer-generated bulk-mail piece made to look like a handwritten letter is deceptive, but harmless I guess, and that’s marketing, right? But when that letter says, “Please pardon my handwritten note …” isn’t this an out-and-out lie? Is this false advertising? Is this illegal? Do we need customers so badly that we’re willing to deceive them like this, and brag about it to boot?
