Wunderman today named Gary Laben—longtime chief of its KBM Group performance marketing unit—as its global chief data officer. He will continue to serve as CEO of KBM, and will report to Wunderman CEO Mark Read.
A company release says that Laben’s charge is to work alongside Global Chief Creative Officer Lincoln Bjorkman to ensure that data-driven insights and creative are aligned consistently throughout the worldwide organization.
“Our strategy is to combine creativity and data to drive results for our clients,” said Read. “Today, with the growth of platforms like Facebook and Twitter and the explosion of data, the world is coming full circle and all marketing is becoming what Lester Wunderman termed ‘direct marketing’ over 50 years ago.”
Laben put in five years as VP of marketing and business development at Experian Marketing Services before joining KBM Group in 2000, where he has resided ever since. A recognized leader in the world of direct marketing, Laben was a winner of the Direct Marketing Club of New York’s Silver Apple Award in 2013, the Edward N. Mayer Jr. Education Leadership prize in 2012, and the Taylor Institute’s Direct Marketer of the Year Award in 2009.
“Our commitment is to ensure that every client has access to the creative and experiential value that data provides,” said Laben in commenting on his appointment.
