Jupiter Media Metrix has added audience ratings for vertical channels and components of online portals to its measurement service, new metrics on how consumers access the Internet and updated its policy on pop-up and pop-under pages, the company said yesterday.
Internet analysis and measurement firm's new categorization structure ranks portal channels, online software applications such as file sharing and chat software, and commercial online services such as America Online, CompuServe and United Online. These now will be rated in 27 categories and 71 subcategories.
“Over the years, online media have evolved from static Web pages to an array of niche content delivered through dynamic platforms and technologies including vast Web portals, proprietary online services and online software utilities like messaging and file-sharing,” said Will Hodgman, president of Jupiter Media Metrix's measurement business.
The company also introduced the Internet Access Report, a monthly rating of how people use online media from home. The report breaks out the top browsers and commercial online services that people use to access the Internet and proprietary networks.
Jupiter Media Metrix also updated its policy for reporting pop-up pages, including a category for “promotional servers.” The category includes Web sites that use techniques resulting in involuntary visits to Web sites. Such sites include sellers of e-mail lists, opt-in e-mail providers, image servers, promotional links and stand-alone domains that generate the majority of their traffic from pop-up or pop-under ads.
