J.C. Penney Will Close Fulfillment Center

J.C. Penney Co. Inc. is preparing to close a fulfillment facility in Wauwatosa, WI.

Current fulfillment contracts, which run through 2002, will be honored, the company said. The retailer fulfills Internet orders for online retailers including Wet Seal and AnnTaylor Stores Corp.

The closing will cost 91 jobs, according to Plano, TX-based J.C. Penney. Some of the employees may have the chance to work in other J.C. Penney operations.

The company opened the facility, which ships products for third parties, in 1999 to serve the growing e-commerce business. But slowing Internet sales made the center unnecessary.

The Wauwatosa facility also contains a telemarketing call center and a furniture warehouse, employing a total of about 400 people including the fulfillment facility. The other departments will not be affected by the layoffs.
