J.C. Penney Company Inc., Plano, TX, yesterday reported a 5.8 percent increase in sales for the second quarter ended July 31. Net sales for the quarter totaled $3.9 billion, up from $3.6 billion last year.
In the same period, comparable-store sales increased 7.1 percent while catalog/Internet sales decreased 1.6 percent. However, Internet sales continued to experience strong growth, rising more than 30 percent for the quarter and about 40 percent for the year-to-date period.
Also, the company completed its sale of the Eckerd business during the quarter.
